Once a month, they set up a free wine tasting. This seems an event in Machias. It gets a good crowd jammed into their limited space. People dress nice to come to the tasting, and are friendly. They will taste about 5 or 6 wines and have cheese and crackers set up. The owner lady will guide you through the tasting, and likes to hear your feedback. She'll pour a second glass if you want another taste. Hopefully the tastings remain civil. I could imagine one trashy alcoholic taking advantage of the hospitality and ruining it for everybody. Luckily the scene at the tasting doesn't meld for that type, and the local watering hole isn't too far of a stumble.

Machias is a rather utilitarian town. Its has a grocery store, a couple family restaurants, gas stations, and banks. The French Cellar breaks the mold by offering a haven of class in this tired town. This is the type of place I'd expect to see in a much larger city with a vibrant downtown, but I am glad it brings that to Machias. Without much else to offer in Machias, one would have to drive 30 to 50 miles, or go as far as Bar Harbor to get some panache.

The prices are good or on par with a place like this. They have an entire wall of ten dollar wine bottles, but many are 20 dollars or more. If you know a little about wine, you will find a great selection to explore. They also have a great selection of beers, some from local breweries, some imports, and other microbreweries from around the country. I wish there were a little more western breweries represented.

friendly , great service and good advice

I love the manchego cheese. Sooo good.

Friendly people and nice selection. Beer is a little pricey but that is completely reasonable all things considered.
